Aloud is built to describe what your camera sees, out loud, for blind and low-vision users. This policy explains what data that requires, where it goes, how long it's kept, and what stays on your device.
When you scan, Aloud captures a photo and sends it to Anthropic's Claude API to generate a spoken description. If you ask a follow-up question about a scan, that question is sent along with it. If you select a Nigerian voice (Jude or Idera) or an OpenAI voice (Alloy, Echo, Fable, Nova, Onyx, or Shimmer), the text to be spoken is sent to that voice's provider — YarnGPT or OpenAI respectively — to generate the audio. Aloud does not collect your name, email, or any account information, does not require you to sign in, and does not tie scans to a personal identity.
Photos and their descriptions are stored locally on your device, in a private on-device database, so your History list works offline and stays under your control. Deleting an entry from History removes it from your device permanently. Aloud does not maintain its own server-side copy of your photos or scan history — the one exception is that, to support follow-up questions about a scan without re-uploading the photo, the server briefly keeps that scan's image in memory for up to one hour, then discards it automatically. This cache is never written to disk or a database, and is separate from your on-device History.
Photos and questions are processed by Anthropic (Claude API) to generate descriptions and answers. Text is processed by YarnGPT only when you choose a Nigerian voice character, or by OpenAI (Audio API) only when you choose one of its voices. Each service receives only what is needed to complete that single request and is not used by Aloud to build a profile of you. Review their own privacy policies for how they handle data on their end.
On-device data (your History list) is kept until you delete an entry yourself or uninstall the app — Aloud never deletes it automatically. Server-side, the only data held is the temporary follow-up cache described above (maximum one hour, then automatically discarded) and standard request logs from operating the service. Aloud does not keep photos, descriptions, or questions on its server beyond that.
Camera access lets you take a photo to scan; photo library access lets you choose an existing photo to scan instead. Neither is used for anything else — Aloud doesn't scan your library in the background, access photos you haven't explicitly selected, or use the camera outside of an active scan.
Aloud does not run advertising, third-party analytics, crash reporting, or behavioral tracking of any kind. There is no SDK in the app collecting usage data, and no profile is built about you or your device.
Aloud is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. Since the app requires no account and stores no personal identity, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children in the first place.
Data in transit to Anthropic, YarnGPT, and OpenAI is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). On-device data is stored within the app's private, sandboxed storage, inaccessible to other apps. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but Aloud is built to minimize what leaves your device and how long anything server-side sticks around.
You can delete any scan from History at any time. You can deny or revoke camera and photo library permissions in iOS Settings, though scanning will not function without camera access. Uninstalling Aloud removes all locally stored scan history immediately — there is nothing left on a server to separately request deleted, since Aloud never held a persistent copy there.
If this policy changes, the “Last updated” date above will change and the new version will be posted here and in the app. Continued use of Aloud after an update means you accept the revised policy.
